11L17 is a resulfurized steel that has a good surface finish and good machinability. The process is as the same as 12L14 where the steel does not alloy with the lead. This grade is steel with high-manganese but low-carbon content. It has almost all the machining feature of 1212 Screw Stock but it has more improved mechanical properties. This steel also possesses good carburizing properties.

High-temperature alloys can be difficult to be machined than regular stainless steels. However, as an iron-based alloy, A286 stainless steel grade can be easier to be machined compared to nickel based precipitation – hardening grades. This stainless steel grade is usually cold drawn and formed though it is harder than other stainless steel grades. In addition, this stainless steel can be work-hardened rapidly.
Forging the material can be done at temperatures 1038o C to 1121o C or 1900o F to 2050o F temperature. This grade can also be produced through vacuum induction melting or argon-oxygen decarburization. Refining the material can also be performed by electro-slag remelting or vacuum arc techniques.

86L20 alloy steel, a triple alloy carburizing steel offering good ductility and durability. It has contained levels of molybdenum and chromium which give exceptional wear resistance and hardness.
This alloy steel grade is one of carburizing alloys mostly used for its strong tough core and high case hardness. The added lead content “L” plays significantly in adding a great finish, machinability, and tool life – it also boosts part production up to 25 percent. Heat treating procedures are used to help it achieve case depth and optimal hardness.
The additional lead content grants it with an improved machinability. In addition, the material is also alloyed with nickel which imparts ductility and good toughness while the molybdenum and chromium increase wearability and hardness penetration. The alloyed elements result in a production of high case hardening and strong tough core.
86L20 alloy steel also exhibits good welding qualities. The advantage as a leaded alloy steel grade, it would not take to sacrifice other desirable properties to improve machinability. However, it is not advisable to use the material for applications over 400o F since its ductility is low at elevated temperatures.
