410 stainless steel reserved for rigid applications where great corrosion resistance, as well as high mechanical properties, are required.
410 stainless steel is a martensitic type of grade which can possess different properties with heat treatment. 410 (UNS S41000) is known to exhibit excellent properties including hardness, high strength, and corrosion resistance. This stainless steel type is often reserved for rigid applications requiring high mechanical properties and great corrosion resistance.
It contains a minimum amount of 11.5% chromium sufficient enough to exhibit corrosion resistance capabilities in steam, mild atmosphere, and chemical environments. 410 is a stainless steel grade supplied in hardened condition but it is still machinable that it can be used for applications requiring moderate heat, high strength, and corrosion resistance. It exhibits superior corrosion resistance as soon as it’s gone hardening, tempering, and polishing.
410 stainless steels are weldable but it is best recommended to undergo them through preheating first and anneal them after welding. If 410 are put through hot working, the temperature used is between 2000o F & 2200o F. 410 stainless steel can also be cold formed with the utilization of most standard methods.
Since type 410 stainless steel is often used for general purpose especially subject for super stressed parts, it is used in following applications:
- Steam & gas turbine blades
- Valve components, pump and shafts
- Cutlery and kitchen utensils
- Bolts, nuts, screws
- Surgical and dental instruments
- Mine ladder rugs
- Seat for oil well pump
- Hardened steel balls
