Inconel bars with their exceptional resistance to oxidation and corrosion are well suited in extreme environments with high levels of temperature and heat. A stable, thick, passivating oxide layer is formed when Inconel is heated. This layer serves to protect the alloy’s surface from further attack.
Inconel alloys can retain their strength across wide range of temperatures and can be fitting to high temperature applications where steel and aluminum would eventually capitulate to creep due to thermally-induced crystal vacancy. Precipitation hardening or solid solution strengthening develops the alloy’s high temperature strength.
Machining and shaping Inconel with the use of traditional techniques can be difficult due to a rapid work hardening. After first machining pass, workpieces are plastically deformed by work hardening. Such case makes age-hardened Inconels like Inconel 718 machined to their hardest to minimize the number of required passes.
Inconel bars are highly sought due to their unique ability of resisting carbonization and oxidation in high-temperature settings.
With their excellent properties and machinability, inconel alloys are typically used in the following applications:
- Gas turbine blades
- Turbocharger rotors and seals
- Pump motor shafts
- Electric submersible
- Pressure levels and chemical processing
- High temperature fasteners
- Heat exchanger tubing
- Natural gas processing
- Steam generators
