17-4 PH or UNS S17400 chromium-nickel-copper hardening stainless steel extensively used for applications that require corrosion resistance and high strength.
17-4 PH stainless steel can develop its excellent hardness and strength with heat treatment. This stainless steel grade can provide toughness in both welds and base metals.
17-4 PH stainless steels exhibit the excellent physical and mechanical properties of high strength, corrosion resistance, and hardness. Their high strength is often maintained to 600o F or 316o C. Mechanical properties in 17-4 grade are optimized through heat treatment.
This stainless steel grade should not be used at the very high temperature which is above 572oF (300oC) or even at very low temperatures. It can also have an adequate resistance to stringent environments like diluted acids or salts and atmospheric corrosion where corrosion resistance is highly required. 17-4 can withstand corrosive attacks better than other standard hardenable steels.
This grade is known to provide a very outstanding combination of good corrosion resistance, mechanical properties, and high strength at high temperatures. Distortion and scaling of 17-4 bars are also minimized by low-temperature heat treatments.
